Symmetrical Valentine Heart: Art at the Daycare

Symmetrical Valentine Heart

The children at Cornerstone Child Development Center are getting ready for Valentine's Day.  When I came to teach art, it seemed only natural to have the Young Twos and the Twos do an art project that involved a heart.  We started with a plain, white construction paper heart and finished with the beautifully decorated heart you see above.  Read on for details.

Introducing the Lesson

  • I demonstrated the steps involved in decorating the heart.
  • We identified the colors used: red, purple, pink.
  • We named the shape used: heart.

Teaching the Lesson

  • As I called each child to the art table, I put a spoonful of pink paint on his/her heart.  If you look carefully at the photo below, you can see that the heart is folded so that the child is only painting half of the shape.

  • When the pink paint had been spread, I squirted a little purple and red on top.  At this point the heart is still folded in half.

  • I helped each child open his/her heart and refold it so the clean side was on top of the painted side.  Then the fun began.  Everyone had to rub and pat their heart to spread the paint on both sides.

  • When the rubbing and patting was done, the children opened their hearts.  Wah-lah!  Paint was on both sides.  It was like magic.  I loved seeing how surprised they were, and proud too.  Just look at those precious faces below.

  • My next step was to squeeze glue onto the painted heart.  It looked like the one below.

  • Then the children dropped Sequins and Spangles into the glue. (We bought them at Discount School Supply.)  This involved a lot of pinching, which was very, very good for developing eye-hand coordination.

  •  Here are a few completed hearts all ready for Valentine's Day.

Concepts Explored:

  • listening and following directions
  • waiting for a turn
  • symmetry
  • color recognition
  • shape recognition
  • eye-hand coordination

All the little-arty-pants at Cornerstone Child Development Center wish you a Happy Valentine's Day.
