Painted Pots Make a Great Gift

Painted Pots Make a Great Gift

I purchased these little terracotta pots at my local Joann Fabric and Craft Store.  They were painted by my two year old grandson, Calvin.  When they were dry, we put a bag of sugared pecans inside to make a yummy gift for our family and friends.

Procedure:

  • Calvin's first job was to paint the pots with tempera paint.  I turned them upside down so he could paint the entire outside...

  • ... including the bottom.

  • Remarkably, the insides remained paint-free.

  • When the paint was dry, I gave the pots two coats of Miniwax Polyurethane (purchased at Lowe's) to seal the paint and make it waterproof.

  • Our next job was to bake our sugared pecans (recipe below).  After the nuts cooled, we stuffed them into snowman party bags: one bag for each pot. Where do you think I found the bags?  At that same Joann Fabric and Craft Store, of course.

  • Here are the bags all lined up and ready to be 'potted'.

  • When I inserted the party bags into the pots, I noticed the pots were too wide. A little tissue paper stuffed inside the pots took up the slack nicely.

Recipe for Sugar Coated Pecans

Ingredients:
1 egg white                                           1 cup white sugar
1 tablespoon water                                ¾ teaspoon salt
1 pound pecan halves                            ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

Directions:
  • Preheat over to 250 degrees F (120 degrees C).  Grease one baking sheet.
  • In a mixing bowl, whip together the egg white and water until frothy.   In a separate bowl, mix together sugar, salt, and cinnamon.
  • Add pecans to egg whites, stir to coat the nuts evenly.  Remove the nuts, and toss them in the sugar mixture until coated.  Spread the nuts out on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake at 250 degrees F (120 degrees C) for 1 hour.  Stir every 15 minutes.

Extending the Activity:

Our family and friends loved receiving these little pots and the sweet treat inside. This project would make a nice gift at any time of year.  Just switch the color of the tissue paper and the theme of the party bag and you could use this gift for any occasion.
