Beaded Ring Ornaments: Art at the Daycare

Beaded Ring Ornaments
Art at the Daycare

The Explorers and Toddlers at Cornerstone Child Development Center had fun making these Beaded Ring Ornaments this week. It's a great project for artists ages 15 months and up. All you need are pipe cleaners and pony beads.

Procedure:

  • I soon found that I had over estimated the developmental stage of my youngest students.  Those who were 12-15 months couldn't comprehend what I was asking them to do.  No worries.  I took their hands and helped them put the beads on their pipe cleaner.  A few months from now they will be able to do it themselves.

  • Children over 15 months were able to do the stringing.  Some needed me to hold the pipe cleaner while they slid the bead on.

  • Others wanted to work independently.

  • I called the children to the art table in groups of three.  As they worked, I watched very, very carefully to assure the beads went on the pipe cleaner and not in the mouth.

  • Stringing beads took great concentration. I was amazed at how determined the children were. Sometimes it took two or three attempts before the bead was strung, but no one gave up. Everyone saw it through to the end.

  • I gave the children a cup of cereal to munch on when their beads were strung.

  • While the children were munching, I twisted the two ends of each pipe cleaner together forming a circle. This would allow the ornament to hang on a Christmas tree.  It would also prevent the beads from falling off.

  • Here are a few ornaments hanging on the class tree.

Extending the Activity:

Last Christmas when my grandson, Calvin, was 20 months old we made a similar Christmas tree ornament from beads and pipe cleaners.  Check out our Pipe Cleaner Christmas Tree Ornament.
