Children's Books: My Other Passion

Children's Books: My Other Passion

I have two passions that have been with me a long, long time:

                                                                            children's art

 and

       children's books

Most of my posts on little-arty-pants have been about children's art.  This blog is full of art activities: some done with my grandson, Calvin, and others with the children at Cornerstone Child Development Center.

I think it's about time I devoted some blog space to my other passion: children's books.  So here goes…

  • I love children's books.
  • I love to read them.
  • I love to collect them.
  • I love to write them, and
  • I love to illustrate them.

Many of you know I have one book in print: Ants in My Pants.  It was published by Scholastic in 2004 and is now printed in two languages: English and Spanish.

When Scholastic published Ants in My Pants, I thought it would be easier to get a second book published; but that has not been the case.  So, although I have a book in print, I also have a very fat folder filled with rejection letters.

I go to writing conferences and hone my craft.  I attend critique groups and revise my manuscript.  And I submit, submit, submit.

Sometimes I get discouraged and think about quitting; but I never follow through and bail. I keep Madeleine L'Engle in mind.  A Wrinkle in Time was rejected 26 times, and you know how that turned out.

If I were to sum up my children's book passion into one word it would be 'never'.  Never say never, and…

…never, ever quit.
