Unmask the Halloween Monster (The Final Chapter)

Unmask the Halloween Monster
Final Chapter

During the weeks leading up to Halloween, Calvin and I have been making art and playing games designed to help him understand masks. I wanted to take some of the 'scare' out of Halloween masks by helping Calvin realize that there's just a regular person behind every mask.

Here I am disguised as the Halloween monster.  What do you think?  I wanted to look different enough to surprise Calvin without looking scary.

His first reaction was to stare.  Then he heard Mommy say, "It's just Neena."  Once she said that, Calvin wanted to touch the mask.

He finally ended up trying the disguise on himself, but the picture we took didn't turn out well enough to post.  Sorry. My hubby was kind enough to take the photos, but he'll never be an Ansel Adams.

So...if your little one is afraid of masks or disguises, try one or all of the following activities:

  • Let your child explore a store bought mask as we did in this activity.

Halloween may be over by the time you read this post, but the same principle can be applied in any situation that involves a disguised person: Santa, the Easter bunny, characters at Disney.  If children are introduced ahead of time, they won't be caught off guard and will be ready to have fun.

Do you have a comment or a suggestion?  I'd love to hear from you.
