Collage Art with Beans

Collage Art with Beans

I'm a fan of dry beans, and when I put beans and kids together, we always have fun.  Last week Calvin played with Beans in a Tub.  He swooshed and swished, scooped and poured to his heart's content.  This week he used the 'left overs' to make a very tactile bean collage.

Procedure:

  • My first step was to pour watered down glue into an easy-squeeze bottle.

  • Calvin's first step was to play.  I knew he needed some time with the beans before he used them for art.

  • Clavin needed help squeezing glue onto the card stock. I put my hand over his, and we worked together to finish the job.  Then I showed him how to drop beans into the glue. He liked the sound they made hitting the paper.  In a matter of minutes he had the paper full.

Extend the Activity:

  • After our collage was finished, I used the extra beans to make homemade beanbags.

  • Then I found a great idea on the blog I Am Moms. The post was entitled Easy Ways to Weather Frankenstorm. I liked the section on Sensory Awareness where the author suggested hiding small toys in the beans.  I think I'll try that with our own Beans in a Tub: Sensory Awareness.
